Magnesium for Hip Pain

Natural Calm has a reputation when it comes to pain relief.
Linda, our CEO, actually started importing Natural Calm from the US because she was so impressed with how it worked for her sister. Debbie was a chronic migraine sufferer. After discovering Natural Calm, Debbie’s migraines were dramatically improved. Her life was changed.
Headaches and migraines are two very important reasons people use Natural Calm.
We also hear from many, many people who use Natural Calm to relieve pain related to fibromyalgia, Lyme disease, Lupus, muscle cramps (sometimes called ‘Charlie Horses’, and especially common at night), muscle-tension/tightness, premenstrual cramps, and joint pain from arthritis or other causes. They approach us at trade shows, thank us at presentations and send us messages about how their lives have been changed.
Chronic pain can be life-destroying, and the drugs to treat it are often toxic. People are so thrilled when they find a natural, mineral-based solution to their pain.

SO, HOW DOES MAGNESIUM HELP?

Here are four important ways Natural Calm eases pain:

  1. Magnesium blocks the stimulation of the NMDA pain receptor in the brain. Calcium and glutamate activate the receptor, but magnesium sits “like a guard at the gate.”
  2. Magnesium reduces pain by relaxing muscles and easing spasms. Again, calcium in the cells causes tension and stimulation at the very cellular level, while magnesium acts as a relaxant and in the process, eases the pain of tense muscles.
  3. Magnesium deficiency is associated with joint weakness and cartilage abnormalities, osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthritis.
  4. Magnesium moderates inflammation at the cellular level. In fact, magnesium-deficiency may cause chronic inflammation.

The science is complex, but the results are straightforward. People get relief from chronic pain when they use Natural Calm. Here’s a selection of quotes from our testimonials page specifically dealing with pain:

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING ABOUT NATURAL CALM FOR PAIN RELIEF

I am a 42 year old and have had migraines and insomnia for years. With recommendations of a friend I decided to try Natural Calm six months ago….My migraines are less frequent and less severe. Finding this product has helped me in so many ways.” — Kerry Holt

…my complaints have always been unbalanced sleep, headaches similar to migraines, but frequent cluster headaches that would not go away. On top of it, I went to my family doctor for some advice on the ‘charlie horses,’ in my left leg that woke me up in the middle of the night, almost every day….Leg cramps, charlie horses, very little sleep = cluster headaches and feeling horrible! When I started to take the Natural Calm as directed, I made only one change. I stopped taking my calcium supplements. To my amazement, within one week….I started to notice a dramatic change and almost…IMMEDIATELY! The ‘charlie horses,’ disappeared! NO LEG CRAMPING! I slept throughout the night without the painstaking leg cramps waking me up and felt more refreshed upon awakening rather than feeling fatigued! The headaches became minimal and almost down to one a week, instead of several a day! The second week and third week only got better and I have been on it for a month now. The only change I made was to not take calcium supplements any longer but started taking Natural Calm. What a HUGE difference this has made!” — Irene Mielnik

I get chronic headaches. The only thing that would relieve them was taking huge amounts of liquid minerals. I was told that I was taking too much calcium without enough magnesium. The Natural Calm handled the headaches right away. They stopped completely after starting my first dosage of Natural Calm.” — Rick H.

I am a “classic migraine” suffer and have been since I was 18 years old. I am now 43. Many attempts to help my migraines have been tried…A lot of the times it was a vicious circle because I remember at one point in my life, after the 14th migraine in just one month, I would wonder which was worse – the cure or the cause…I felt almost like a prisoner to my migraines having to live within my limits all of the time because the migraines would still keep coming until…… It is hard for me to pin down the right words for me to express this but if I had to choose one word it would be FREEDOM!!!!!! Why freedom from my migraines? because I started taking “Natural Calm”…The main reason why I have wrote this testimony is that I hope it helps other migraine sufferers think about and consider giving Natural Calm a chance.” — Kim Davis

I have been using Natural Calm for about 10 years. When I started taking it, I was suffering from backaches and visited a chiropractor every week. I haven’t had a backache in so long, I can’t remember when they stopped.” — S.H.
For a few months I was waking up in the night with excruciating cramps in my legs and feet. Sometimes I would be up for hours trying to work them out. I would cry, the pain was so bad. A dear friend recommended Natural Calm. I started drinking it twice a day and I can honestly tell you that I have not had a cramp since. I would recommend this product to anyone.” — Cathy B

I’ve noticed an amazing difference. I have fibromyalgia, and after starting to use Natural Calm I noticed an immediate change in energy. I’m ironing clothes and I haven’t ironed in ages!” — M.T.

A few years ago, I was having severe joint and muscular aches and pains where I had limited mobility in shoulder and knee joints and had to hold onto something to hobble out of bed, limping…I tried Natural Calm and in 24 hours I had great relief. Within 48 hours the symptoms completely disappeared. I took the daily dosage until the deficiency was handled and now I only take about a teaspoon a day and have not had recurring symptoms.” — Anne Fewel

I normally recommend Natural Calm to my patients to help alleviate their muscle tightness, reduce inflammation and help their adjustments hold better…I have urged many other chiropractors to begin using it in their practices. Everyone is pleased with the results and their patients, like mine, love it. Natural Calm is the best, most important recommendation I can give anyone.” — Dr. Chuck Olds

Six weeks ago, my body was in pain. All of my joints were hurting and it all started within a two or three day period. I didn’t know what had happened. I went to the urgent care center and they did some tests, blood work, etc., and couldn’t find anything wrong. They just wanted to put me on painkillers…I had many of the symptoms that come about from magnesium deficiency. I knew that I needed this product. I ordered it and started using it right away. I could see a difference that night when I went to bed…Within days, my condition started changing for the better. The pain went away, my appetite came back, I regained my body weight—everything seemed to start working right again. My condition is now handled. I feel great! …I would recommend this product to everyone. It is the best supplement I have ever used.” — C.F.

Four years ago, I was diagnosed with breast cancer…there are side effects from the Tamoxifen drug, which I have been on for two years. I was experiencing very restless sleeping, being fatigued and in a great deal of muscle pain. After just two days of taking Natural Calm, I couldn’t believe I was in no pain. Sleeping very well and lots of energy. You can only imagine how ecstatic I was—feeling normal again. This product is beyond words for me! I don’t miss a day without taking it twice.” — P.S.

Magnesium & Pain Relief FAQs

What type of magnesium is best for joint pain?

There are a number of types of magnesium including: citrate, glycinate, carbonate, oxide, and malate. The body can absorb a different percentage of each type, so knowing which is best for joint pain may save you a lot of time trying out different types. For example, magnesium oxide has a lower absorption rate than the other forms and is better for conditions such as indigestion rather than joint pain. Magnesium citrate appears to be best for joint pain.

Magnesium citrate is the only form of magnesium proven to be absorbable by humans. Magnesium malate appears to have good absorption as well, but there are not enough studies on it yet to say for sure. The success of using magnesium glycinate and magnesium oxide has been mixed and may depend on the individual’s body chemistry and type of joint pain.

Note: If you take calcium, you need to make sure that your daily intake of calcium does not exceed 600-800mg/day or you could negatively affect your magnesium levels (magnesium works with calcium in the body) Get more details about types of magnesium at this page .

Is magnesium good for joint pain?

A study published in the journal ” Bone and Mineral ” showed that magnesium can help with osteoarthritis. The study involved 186 individuals who had mild to moderate knee osteoarthritis. They were given 600 mg of slow-release magnesium or a placebo for twelve months. At the end of twelve months, those taking magnesium had significant improvements in pain and stiffness scores compared with those receiving the placebo.

How much is safe to take? One meta-analysis involving seven studies on using magnesium for various forms of chronic pain such as fibromyalgia and migraine headaches found an optimal dose range between 420mg – 960mg per day (of elemental magnesium).

What is the best supplement for hip joint pain?

We recommend using magnesium citrate because it is the most absorbable form of magnesium.

Joint pain or arthritis can be debilitating and interfere with daily life activities, so finding a good treatment is key to keeping yourself active. Magnesium citrate has been shown to help reduce pain associated with osteoarthritis of the knee, which according to statistics from Statistics Canada, affects around 3.9 million Canadians and is the leading cause of disability.

Is magnesium a good anti inflammatory?

The American College of Rheumatology acknowledges the role of magnesium in reducing inflammation. They recommend a high dose of 450mg daily for those who have an inflammatory condition such as rheumatoid arthritis.

Magnesium supplements may help with inflammatory conditions, but having the correct diagnosis for your joint pain is important. If you are unsure of what type of magnesium supplement to take, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Can a lack of magnesium cause joint pain?

Magnesium is not only good for reducing inflammation and pain, but there is evidence that low magnesium levels can actually cause joint problems such as osteoarthritis. A study published in the “British Medical Journal” found that there was a greater than 50% increased risk of hip fracture in women with low magnesium levels compared to those who had normal magnesium levels.

One way you can ensure you get enough magnesium through diet alone includes eating dark leafy green vegetables such as spinach, broccoli, kale and swiss chard (if you do eat or drink dairy products make sure they are organic because non-organic dairy foods contain high amounts of pesticides which deplete your body stores of minerals such as magnesium). Other whole foods rich in magnesium include pumpkin seeds, almonds, cashews oatmeal, brown rice and bananas.
