Myth-Busting: Natural Calm Contains GMO-Corn and MSG?

Adapted from The Power of Magnesium: What the Science Really Says About This Essential Mineral, by Dr. Alison Smith, PhD

Today, there is so much information at our fingertips, but it sometimes comes at a price—many readers believe that whatever they read on the internet is accurate and factual, and few verify the information they read.

Bloggers can write anything they wish on their blogs, and their readers will most likely not double-check to see if the information is supported by factual information, research, or scientific study. This is how myths and misconceptions emerge.

There have been a number of misconceptions about magnesium absorption.

But there are also myths about Natural Calm, specifically.

In a forum post on paleohacks.com, the owner of the blog claims that Natural Calm contains genetically modified (GMO) corn products and monosodium glutamate(MSG).

Is that true?

Simply stated, no.

Natural Calm does not contain any GMO products or MSG.

Here’s what Natural Calm does contain:

  • Magnesium carbonate powder and citric acid powder (when the two powders are dissolved in water, magnesium citrate is created.)
  • Organic fruit flavourings
  • Organic stevia, a plant-based natural sweetener

The unflavored version of our Natural Calm does not contain any corn or derivatives of corn.

The flavouring used in the other varieties (Raspberry Lemon, Sweet Lemon, Orange, and Cherry) does have a sub-ingredient that is derived from corn (organic maltodextrin).

However, there are no corn proteins in the product and all flavours of Natural Calm have been verified as non-GMO by the Non-GMO Project.

Natural Calm is Verified Non-GMO

According to the Non-GMO Project:

“A GMO, or genetically modified organism, is a plant, animal, microorganism or other organism whose genetic makeup has been modified in a laboratory using genetic engineering or transgenic technology. This creates combinations of plant, animal, bacterial and virus genes that do not occur in nature or through traditional crossbreeding methods.”

The Non-GMO Project is a non-profit organization dedicated to building and protecting a non-GMO food supply. The Non-GMO Project provides consumers with a list of verified non-GMO brands, and Natural Calm (called Natural Vitality in the U.S.) is one of those verified brands.

Why Citric Acid?

Natural Calm contains citric acid that is derived from a natural fermentation process involving sugar from non-GMO sugar beets. Citric acid is a common ingredient in prepared foods and drinks, and in Natural Calm, citric acid is essential to the process whereby our magnesium becomes an ionic, highly-absorbable form of magnesium citrate.

Natural Calm Does Not Contain MSG

It’s important for consumers to be aware of and to ask questions about the flavourings added to the foods and supplements they purchase; some brands derive their flavourings from monosodium glutamate, the sodium salt of glutamic acid—the most naturally abundant non-essential amino acid
found in foods like meat, dairy, and cheese.

Monosodium glutamate (MSG) is used as a flavour enhancer; however, there is scientific evidence that MSG is toxic. And for that reason, it should be avoided.

Luckily, Natural Calm only uses organic flavours that are not derived from MSG. So, you can go ahead and enjoy your raspberry-lemon Natural Calm without worrying about toxic synthetic flavour enhancers like MSG.

Natural Calm magnesium is also free from artificial sweeteners, flavours or colours, gluten-free and sugar-free.
