As most of you know, every Natural Calm purchase supports our Organics 4 Orphans (O4O) work in Kenya. O4O creates food security, improves health and creates economic opportunities through organic gardening.
The O4O projects are our passion. For almost ten years running now, we’ve been hands-on all the way. Every year, for six months, we’ve been on the ground in Kenya, creating the training centre, building the local team and teaching the courses.
This month, the spring school is underway – but we’re on the other side of the world, in Australia. It’s a first, and it’s a sign that the model is sustainable. It runs without us.
This semester, the O4O school is under the guidance of our talented team of nationals. The Kenyans at the helm are teaching the course end-to-end.
We have 21 students in the one-month spring school, and most are primary school teachers. First, we teach the teachers how to grow organic food, using simple tools and any available space. Then, the teachers teach the children. They demonstrate how to create the garden beds, plant and tend the crops, replenish the soil, harvest and use the plants.
We know that health is the basic foundation for a flourishing life. The O4O curriculum gives kids what they need to grow strong and ward-off disease, but it also equips the children with skills they can use to earn a good living after school. On graduation, they can become master organic gardeners, herbal nutritionists, and even run their own businesses exporting organic produce.
Today, we’re laying the foundation by working with these teachers. They are our beta testers for the children’s curriculum, which we plan to extend from kindergarten through to high school.
It’s rewarding to know all of this continues without us there. We’re working ourselves out of our jobs, and that’s a sign of sustainability.
Not that we have plans to slow down. There is plenty to be done in raising awareness of green nutrition in Africa, building partnerships and sharing the O4O model.
