Time is tight in the morning, but pausing for breakfast is a must; the health benefits of breakfast are well-founded. This morning meal translates directly to more energy, a boosted mood, and better eating throughout the day.
What if you’re not hungry? Or what if you feel like breakfast isn’t a meal you can easily digest? Natural Vitality spoke with Ashley Koff, renowned dietician, to find out why some people feel they just can’t face food in the morning. According to Koff, your morning appetite is directly related to stress. Morning stress can send the body into fight or flight mode – a state in which you’re less inclined to eat.
Make breakfast a success by making it as easy as possible, Koff suggests, rather than striving for perfection. Add foods like cacao, seeds and whole grains. The magnesium naturally present in these foods can help reduce stress in the morning.
This delicious smoothie, with a dash of Natural Calm, delivers over 200 mg of magnesium. Make it as per the directions if you’re serving one person; double or triple the recipe as needed, if you’re sharing.
1 frozen banana
1 cup nut milk
1 ½ tablespoons almond butter
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon unflavoured Natural Calm
½ teaspoon vanilla
Method: Add all ingredients in a blender, blend until smooth and enjoy!
Tip: Use pre-frozen, over-ripe bananas. Browning bananas give a more intense banana flavour and a creamy texture.
